Leo’s Experience

Answering God’s Call To Missions Together

Introduction -

For decades, the Diocese of West Texas has had a hand in helping Hondurans in their own country through the diocese’s World Mission’s department. Whether it was answering a direct call from a Honduran bishop or simply following the will of the Holy Spirit wherever it was leading them, missionaries have been hard at work pursuing educational, veterinary, water well drilling efforts and more. Dozens of groups, and hundreds of missionaries later, the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas can say they have a strong relationship with the Catracho people (Hondurans). By providence, it would seem that every single year a new opportunity to work together comes along and in 2026, that was no different. What seemed like a dream because of conflicting schedules, different program areas, and difference in locations finally came true… Two ministries from the DWTX had the chance to come together and collaborate on Honduran soil! Manos de Dios Honduras Mission and Love Honduras Vet & Vision finally crossed over. The spark? A student interested in veterinary work.

Background:

The Manos de Dios Honduras Mission was started in the year 2000 and is an ecumenical faith based non profit organization based in Danlí, El Paraíso focused on four pillars: Education, Community Outreach, Entrepreneurship/Professional Development, and Spiritual Growth.

The Love Honduras Vet & Vision Mission has been serving in Honduras for over 30 years, focused on the Siguatepeque area. Their focuses include Veterinary work and Vision clinics. Through their work, they offer veterinary aid for rural families who are dependent on their animals as well as visual screening and free glasses for school children. Every year, they serve thousands of families, individuals, as well as their pets and livestock.

Both of these ministries have a focus on serving those who do not have access to the resources necessary to help themselves. By walking alongside their Honduran brothers and sisters, they find the opportunities to work side by side, hand in hand, to bridge the gaps and create community in the process. With this in mind, conversations began in 2025 between leaders of Manos de Dios, Patricia Perea & Dani Jaime and leaders of Love Honduras Vet & Vision Mission, Bill Campaign, Kerry Green & Terry Snow to find ways to collaborate in our joint effort to love our neighbors in Honduras.

Leonardo:

As most often happens when you tend to something and take after its growth, it bears fruit. One such fruit from the ministerial efforts of Manos de Dios was Leonardo, a student that has been part of Manos’s scholarship program who has a dream of becoming a veterinarian. Through this passion, Leo discovered a love of serving others and helping those who need it. Determined to help him in his educational and servant pursuits, Manos discovered an opportunity for Leo to join the team of missionaries from Love Honduras Vet & Vision Mission who work with the animals in rural communities.. After many conversations and some careful planning, God opened the way for this crossover to happen.

Leo is currently studying to become a veterinarian as in his second year of veterinary school. With all of his knowledge and tools acquired through his schooling, he shared that he had an incredible experience serving alongside our friends at Love Honduras.

Together, they formed part of a missionary effort that vaccinated over 4,200 animals, including dogs, cats, goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, chickens, which are essential to the daily lives of the rural families served. Additionally, the team was able to screen 2,585 individuals for vision problems and provided them glasses and referrals as needed.

After participating in an incredible undertaking that answers our Diocesan call to “Let our Love be Genuine”, here is what Leo had to say:

“Personally, I found this to be a tremendous help to many people in communities lacking local veterinary support. I am deeply moved by how these individuals travel from another country to assist and help address this need.”

“I was part of Team 4, called "Delta", led by Dr. Natasha; I am incredibly grateful to her for giving me such a great opportunity to learn, as well as to Dr. Bob Campaign, from whom I also learned a great deal.”

“I leave with the satisfaction of having helped so many people and met amazing individuals, and with a strong desire to participate in this mission again.”

Leo is just one of many students eager to find ways to serve God and his country and we are proud of being a small part of his story. We know that in mission work there are many lessons to learn, but one of the most important ones is that we are not called to do this work alone. We are always grateful for the collaboration of our partners that make the good work possible. Thank you Dr. Bill Campaign, Kerry Green & Terry Snow for taking one of our students onboard with your team and allowing him to connect with incredible professionals that allowed him to experience growth and learning. Thank you for showing us how to let our love be genuine!

We also know that when two or more are gathered in his name, Jesus is there in the midst of them… so why not get together in his name? Manos looks forward to partnering with Love Honduras and our other ministry friends in the future!
